Why Copper
Copper gutters cost noticeably more than aluminum — and they should, because they last 5–10x as long. A properly installed copper gutter system has a 50+ year service life with no maintenance, develops a beautiful natural patina over time, and adds real value to historic and premium-architecture homes. For the right house, copper isn’t an indulgence — it’s the right material.
What We Install
- Copper half-round gutter — classic curved profile, the architectural standard for historic and premium homes
- Round copper downspouts — pairs with half-round; also available in rectangular for some applications
- Soldered seams — copper joints are properly soldered (not sealant-caulked) for a 50+ year leak-free life
- Decorative end caps — ornate copper end caps where the gutter terminates without a downspout
- European-style profiles — rain gutters with a different cross-section, more common on Tudor-, Mediterranean-, and certain craftsman-style homes
- Specialty K-style copper — K-style profile in copper for homes where K-style is the design intent but copper is the material choice
- Box gutters / built-in gutters — the architectural style where the gutter is recessed into the roofline; we restore these on historic homes
- Rain chains — copper rain chains in place of downspouts on some installations
When Copper Is the Right Call
- Historic restoration — if the original house had copper, the restoration usually should too
- Premium custom homes — high-end builds where the architect specified copper
- Specific architectural styles — Tudor, Mediterranean, certain craftsman bungalows, traditional brick
- Architectural accent — copper rain chains, copper conductor heads, or copper just on a feature elevation
- Long-term ROI calculation — if you plan to be in the house for 30+ years, the lifetime cost of copper can actually beat 2–3 cycles of aluminum replacement
The Patina Process
Brand-new copper is bright shiny penny-colored. Within months it darkens to a deep brown. Over a few years it begins to develop the classic green-blue verdigris patina. Some customers want the bright copper look forever (we can apply protective coatings to slow patina); most want the natural aging. Either way, the structural performance is unchanged — the patina is purely cosmetic.
How We Price Copper
Linear-foot pricing significantly higher than aluminum, but priced fairly relative to material costs. Copper is itself a commodity-priced metal so prices move with commodity markets — we lock in quotes for 30 days. We quote in writing after a site walk. Here’s how our quotes work.
