Types of Gutter Guards We Install
- Stainless steel micro-mesh — the gold standard. Fine stainless mesh over a rigid frame. Blocks even pine needles, seed pods, and shingle grit while letting water through. Most expensive option, best long-term performance.
- Reverse-curve / surface tension — the “hood” style. Water curves around the edge and into the gutter while debris falls off. Works well in most situations, can struggle in extremely heavy rain.
- Screen guards — aluminum or stainless screen with larger openings. Cheapest option, keeps leaves out but lets fine debris through. A good budget choice on homes without much fine debris.
- Foam inserts — foam blocks that fill the gutter and let water through. Cheap, easy to install yourself, but tends to break down within a few years and can hold moisture. We generally don’t recommend, but install when requested.
Are Guards Worth It for Your House?
Honest answer: depends on the tree situation. Some Jackson homes get a clear payback within 2–3 years; others don’t. Things that argue FOR guards:
- Tall trees overhanging the roof (oaks, sweetgums, sycamores)
- Pine trees within 30 feet of the house (pine needles are the #1 reason cheap guards fail)
- Two-story home (each cleaning costs more, so the avoided-cleaning savings add up faster)
- You’re tired of going up a ladder yourself
- You’re aging in place and ladder work is a real safety concern
Things that argue AGAINST guards (or argue for cheaper guards):
- Open lot with no trees nearby — you probably don’t need them at all
- Ranch home with easy access — cleanings are cheap, payback period is longer
- Tight budget and a clean roofline — basic screen guards may be plenty
We’ll walk your house and tell you straight which category you’re in. We don’t upsell premium guards to homes that don’t need them.
Guards on Existing Gutters vs. New Install
Most gutter guards can be retrofitted onto existing gutters in good condition. If your gutters are old, sagging, or leaking, we usually recommend addressing those problems first — guards on a failing gutter just delay the inevitable. When we install guards as part of a new gutter installation, the guards integrate cleanly with the gutter system from day one.
What Guards Don’t Do
Guards reduce cleaning. They don’t eliminate it. Even the best micro-mesh guards eventually need a yearly visual check, a hose-off, and occasional debris removal from the top surface. A “never clean your gutters again” sales pitch is overselling. We’re honest about this from day one.
How We Price Gutter Guards
Linear-foot pricing depending on the guard type. Stainless micro-mesh costs the most; screen guards the least. We quote both installed-with-new-gutters and retrofit-onto-existing prices. Here’s how our quotes work.
